Governor Wada Idris of Kogi State was
involved in a ghastly automobile crash on Friday afternoon. The accident
claimed the life of his aide-de-camp, Idris Mohammed, on the spot.
Mohammed was an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
However, his driver was said to have escaped unhurt.
Wada, who was returning from his
hometown of Ayingba, where he had gone to attend the 2012 Igala summit,
was heading back to Lokoja to attend Friday’s Jumat Service when the
accident occurred on the Lokoja-Ajaokuta Road.
The accident occurred at Emi Woro
village, about 12km to Lokoja, the state capital, in between Prime
Polytechnic and Salem University, in Ajaokuta Local Government Area.
The governor reportedly sustained fractures, and was rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, for treatment.
According to www.premiumtimes.com.ng, an online news medium, Wada broke one of his legs in the accident.
Wada was later transferred to a hospital in Abuja for a better medical treatment as a result of his injuries.
The governor has been admitted at Cedacrest Hospital, 4, Amurie Omanze Street, Garki 2, Abuja.
Our correspondent observed that security
was beefed up around the area, just as scores of family members, aides
and political associates besieged the hospital.
Kogi State Government officials and vehicles were also seen in large numbers at the hospital on Friday evening.
Our correspondent learnt that only the official black jeep of the governor was involved in the accident.
Reports said the jeep had a burst tyre,
even as the car ran into an uncompleted building, making it to
somersault. In the process, his ADC, Mohammed, was thrown off from the
vehicle. The jeep later ran over him in the course of summersaulting.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Bologi Yabagi, in a statement on Friday, confirmed the accident.
He, however, said Wada was in a stable condition.
Yabagi said, “The convoy of the
(Executive) Governor of Kogi State, Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada, has been
involved in a ghastly accident. The governor survived the road mishap
and is in a stable condition.
“Sadly however, the governor’s Aide-de-Camp, Idris Mohamed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, died on the spot.
“The accident occurred on Friday
afternoon at Emi Woro Village, about 12km from the state capital in
between Prime Polytechnic and Salem University in Ajaokuta Local
Government Area. The convoy was returning from an annual Igala Education
Summit, which the governor declared open at the state university in
Anyigba.”
