Alleged witchcraft: Woman, 70, lynched over step-son’s ordeal

ADO-EKITI—A 70-year-old woman, Mrs. Rebecca Adewumi, was, yesterday, lynched by a mob in Omuo-Ekiti,  Ekiti State, over alleged witchcraft, even as the deceased family petitioned the police, asking for justice.

Narrating the ordeal her mother passed through to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti,  the first daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Grace Smith, said her mother was invited to the palace of Olomuo, Oba Noah Omonigbehin, some time last May on allegation that she used her witchcraft power to harm her step-son, one Ola.

“On getting to Olomuo’s palace, the family was asked to come the following day at 6a.m. and on the said day, the palace was full to the brim. She was then asked to undress to the pants, after which a series of questions were asked. My mother was then given a concoction (Obo leave)said to make witches confess and die. My  dear mother was told that she would die within seven days if she was involved in Ola’s matter.

“Nine days passed and nothing happened and I left for my base in Lagos. Three weeks after, June 26, some youths in the town went to our house and brought out my mother and forced her to drink a poisonous item. They then took her outside into the rain where she was beaten and subjected to serious torture. When she was almost dying they took her back into her room and laid her on the bed. She died on June 30.

”While she was being beaten, some youths went to the house of her younger sister, Mrs Anike Orojo, who was also beaten for daring to cater for her.”

Grace said of the family members knew the whereabout of the corpse of her late mother.

Commenting on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, said the police got report about the incident and the petition by the family.

Dana Crash: How it all happened

On 3rd June 2012 about 1545 hours[1], 5N-RAM, a Boeing MD-83, a domestic scheduled commercial flight, operated by Dana Airlines Limited as flight 992 (DAN 992), crashed into a densely populated area during a forced landing following a total loss of power in both engines while on approach to Muhammed Murtala Airport (LOS), Lagos, Nigeria. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and the airplane was on an instrument flight plan. All of the 153 persons aboard the airplane, including the 6 crew members were fatally injured. There were 10 confirmed ground fatalities. The airplane was destroyed. There was post impact fire. The flight originated at Abuja (ABV) and the destination was LOS.

The airplane was on the fourth flight segment of the day, consisting of two round-trips between Lagos and Abuja. The accident occurred during the return leg of the second trip. DAN 992 was on final approach for runway 18R at LOS when the crew reported the total loss of power.

According to interviews, the flight arrived in ABV as Dana Air flight 993 about 1350. According to Dana Air ground personnel, routine turn-around activities occurred, including refueling of the airplane. DAN 992 initiated engine startup at 1436, taxied to the runway and was later airborne at 1458 after the flight had reported that it had a fuel endurance of 3.5 hours. Shortly after takeoff, DAN 992 reported 1545 as the estimated time of arrival at LOS as the flight climbed to a cruise altitude of 26,000 ft[2]. DAN0992 made contact with Lagos Area Control Center at 1518 hours.

Severely tortured dog with big swollen tongue found.

How can a person be so cruel to an innocent dog? A dog was found with electric tape around the tongue that caused the tongue to get extremely swollen.

Pictures show the horrific abuse suffered by Hope, a stray dog, which was found with the mouth covered with electric tape and its tongue sticking out.

Veterinarians said the tongue had been exposed at least 24 hours and was so swollen that most will need to be removed.

Deep wounds covered his body, some deep enough to cause muscle damage, taking 100 stitches to close the wounds.

The dog, a pug-mix was first seen on Baker Road in Weatherford, Texas, where extreme temperatures have soared above 90 degrees.

She was clearly terrified and turning in pain, after being savagely beaten and tortured.

ABC is set to run a new show called "666 Park Avenue," which will contain supernatural content, and will contain sex and high drama according to reports.

The hour long drama is being produced by the same people who brought TV "The Vampire Diaries," "The Secret Circle," and "Gossip Girl." The show is expected to be a big hit, but has some concerned over the content and especially the storyline about making deals with the devil.

Warner Bros. Television and Alloy are behind the new drama, which is based on a book series by Gabriella Pierce.

The drama will be the fourth commissioned to pilot at ABC already this season, following shows Shawn Ryan's Last Resort, the untitled Roland Emmerich election project and Shonda Rhimes' period hotel piece Gilded Lillys, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Femi Falana, Nigeria’s rights lawyer becomes SAN

Mr Femi Falana, a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, alongside 24 others has been elevated to the elite lawyers’ rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, by the Legal Practitioners Privileges committee.

The elevation was endorsed at its meeting held today at the Supreme Court complex in Abuja, in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Practitioners’ Act 2004. Congratulations to Mr. Femi Falana, SAN.

The other new entrants are Professor Yemi Akinseye- George, a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Professor Dakas Clement James Dakas, Joy Okungbowa Adesina, Chief Mrs. Connie – Jeanne Aremu, Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, Ogwu James Onoja, Garuba Usman Tetengi, Henry Oghogho Ogbodu, Selekeowei Larry, Abenny O. Now,  this morning Bishop Oyedepo, won his N2 billion assault case in court after Justice Ojo of the Ogun State high court dismissed the case on the grounds that the application lacked merit and that the 'slapped lady' remains a ghost victim.

A Lagos based lawyer, Robert Igbinedion, had filed a lawsuit on behalf of a girl who was filmed being slapped by the founder of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) during a deliverance session a few years back. Mr Igbinedion failed to produce the girl, making it impossible to have a case against the Bishop.

My Heart Bleeds

Today, I’m not about to give you the normal inspirational article. No, I’m here to vent my anger because there’s so much injustice in this country and I’m not just about to sit down and watch my country go down the drain.

I know that everyone is aware of the Dana Air crash that happened on Sunday the 3rd of June in Lagos. Yes, we all mourned, three days of mourning, people tweeting their condolences, others changing their display pictures to candles and putting RIP on their BB status.

The president declared three days of mourning across the country. How was the mourning observed? With flags just flying at half mast! Oh my God! Everyone has returned to their respective places of business, offices and shops are open for business, the president is off to attend to other pressing issues and that’s it! Then why on earth did he declare the three days of mourning? No prayers were said, no special services held, no special dress code to honour the dead or black bands worn…nothing. Just three days “for mouth”.

Have we sat down to really think deep about the crash? The souls lost, the lives destroyed, destinies cut short. How do you think the people on board felt, at that last minute when the plane made its way to the ground? Women thinking about their kids and husbands they left at home, parents wondering who would take care of their kids when they are gone, parents who looked at all their kids that were seated with them on board that aircraft, children in utter fear, crying for their helpless parents to come to their aid. Now, what about the people that were just enjoying the day with their families in their houses and had no clue that evil was about to befall them.

Yes, indeed, the Dana Air plane crash was a big blow to Nigeria and the nation got the blow in the groins. About 170 people died in the incident but it seemed like the entire nation of 150 million people had one connection or the other to the individuals on the ill-fated plane.

I don’t know about anyone else but as far as I am concerned, justice must be served. It’s about time we Nigerians stood up for our rights so as to save our lives. If the government and the other people in power are too “busy” to be concerned about the lives of its people, then we have to stand up and force them to do their duty!

Do we have to wait for disasters like this to happen before we are jolted to life and do what is right? Why do we like to look for the solution after something has happened? Is it not logical to use preventive measures instead of waiting for the sickness to hit before we start research to get the drug that will cure the illness? Crying over spilt milk has always been the case in Nigeria. Why can’t we put the lid on the bottle of milk before it spills?

The New Lucky restaurant is located in Ahmedabad, India. The restaurant is in the middle of an old Muslim cemetery.

Krishan Kutti Nair, is the owner of this creepy restaurant. He and his costumers believe that this location is good and it brings good luck to everyone.

The graves are scattered throughout the restaurant making it difficult for customer to get to the tables. The waiters have learned the best ways to maneuver around the graves with trays full of tea in their hands.

Nobody knows who the graves in this restaurant belong to, but local historians suspect that they are the resting places of relatives of a 16th-century Sufi saint whose tomb lies nearby. Regardless of their inhabitants, one thing is for sure, Nair doesn’t plan on moving them or his restaurant.

 Every morning he wipes the graves with a cloth and decorates them with fresh flowers, Nair and his customers  thank the inhabitants in the graves for their good luck, according to your Jewish news.

Iruh and former Governor of Kogi State Ibrahim Idris during Iruh’s pulling out ceremony

When Brig. Gen. Sylvester Iruh (retd.) left Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday, July 6, his goal was to return to his family in Akute, Ogun State.

Having left them for a day to attend a burial in Ilorin, Iruh must have been eager to return to his Akute residence.

But his hopes were dashed when he was attacked by suspected herdsmen on the Long Bridge on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Iruh’s wife, Christiana, told our correspondent on Monday that she was expecting her husband when she received call that he had been attacked.

She said, “When I got to the Lagos State Emergency Hospital where he was rushed to, I was told he was dead.

“I asked the other occupants of the vehicle – two men and a woman – what happened to my husband and they said the tyre of the Hilux vehicle he was driving had problem. So, he had to stop on the bridge to change it.

“They said other motorists going on the road kept warning them that the place was dangerous. So, he decided to leave the place and change the tyre when they got to a safe spot.”

Our correspondent learnt that Sylvester asked the other occupants to get into the vehicle quickly so that they could leave the place.

But before Iruh could join them, two men came out from under the bridge and immediately shot him with an arrow.

Christiana said, “I was told they immediately pounced on him after that and stabbed him all over his body and face. One of the daggers stuck to his back.

“The dagger was removed at the mortuary. The men who attacked him were said to be carrying sticks like Fulani nomads with bows and arrows in their bags.”

One of the occupants of the vehicle was said to have sustained stab wounds on his arm too. The suspects, it was learnt, robbed them of their money and phones.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Iruh had driven from Ilorin in convoy of a bus conveying women who also attended the burial.

One of the occupants of the bus, Mrs. Kemi Agbekeye, said, “This incident happened between 6.30pm and 7pm. We took off together, but Daddy Iruh overtook us. But when we got to the long bridge, we noticed that his car had stopped.

“We decided to stop and wait for them a little distance ahead because a trailer was parked in front of his vehicle.

“But after five minutes and they still had not taken off, we had to call them to ask what was wrong with the vehicle. That was when they told us they had been attacked.

“Moments later, the vehicle got to where we were, with Iruh in the back and blood gushing out of his body. He was pronounced dead at the hospital we took him to.”

Agbekeye said while they were at the hospital, four people were brought in later that night, who said they had been attacked by herdsmen on the bridge. But none of them died.

THE fundamentalist Islamic sect, Jama’atu Ahlissunnah Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, otherwise known as Boko Haram, on Tuesday in a statement claimed responsibility for the mass killings in Plateau State at the weekend.

More than 100 persons were reportedly killed in attacks on three communities in the Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of the state on Saturday and Sunday.

The sect “thanked God for the success of the attacks” and vowed that there was no going back on the jihad (Holy War) it had launched against Christians and the government. It also asked “Christians in Nigeria to accept Islam” as a condition for a ceasefire.

It described as a “new lie” claims by the new National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, that he has an access for a dialogue with its leaders.

The statement

Full (and unedited) text of the Boko Haram statement, issued by its famous spokesman, Abu Qaqa, and posted on SaharaReporters on Tuesday, reads, “The Jama’atu Ahlissunnah Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad, is grateful to Almighty God and hereby makes it known to the world of our success and attack on Barkin Ladi and Riyom in Plateau State on Christians, security agencies and members of National Assembly.

“Like we said earlier, Christians in Nigeria should accept Islam, that is true religion, or they will never have peace. We do not regard them as trusted Christians as some illiterates are campaigning because it was Christians that first declared war on Muslims with the support of government.

“Like we said, we shall continue to look for government officials; they will not have the rest of mind. We will attack their homes and security agencies in the same way they are attacking us and destroying our houses that we have been renting. We will continue with what we did in Rijiyar Zaki in Kano State.

“To the general public, particularly those in Kano that are dragging their heads into this fight by supporting security agencies. Let them learn from what happened to people in Kurna quarters. From now on anyone found wanting should have himself to blame. We do not have any agenda than working to establish Islamic Kingdom like during the time of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) no matter what will happen to us.

“We heard the information going round that new National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, has gotten means of reaching us for a dialogue, that is a new lie.”

 86 died –STF

The Special Task Force, a military outfit in charge of security in the state, on Tuesday, however, put the number of dead victims of the weekend’s attacks at 86.

Sharjah Police said they arrested one of them and are taking steps to seize the remaining offenders, two of them have fled the country.

The woman told police that five men took turns raping her in an industrial area in Sharjah before dumping her on the road and ran away.

After research in recent days, police found a rapist who was in custody at a police center for having sex with another pregnant woman.

"The police found that two other rapists fled the UAE immediately after committing the crime. Police also said they are taking steps catch those still in the UAE and bring back those who fled," the local news media reported.
