The Lagos State Police Command has waded into the controversy surrounding the #SaveMayowa campaign which a popular blogger described as a fraudulent scheme designed to fleece innocent members of the public.

The campaign which has raised more than N32 million since it started was embroiled in controversy on Thursday when the popular blogger asked Nigerians not to donate to the fund.

Following this development, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed full scale investigation into the campaign.

Owoseni also directed Access Bank to freeze the account opened in the name of the patient, Mayowa.

In a statement issued by Dolapo Badmos, spokesman of the Lagos Police Command, she stated:

”The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni has directed full scale investigation into the report that the *Save Mayowa Campaign* is a fraud.

EBOLA: Rivers state Min. of Health ask people who visited hospital where doctor died to come forward

Below is a statement from the Rivers state Ministry of Health calling on all those who visited Samstel Clinic in Rumuokoro, Port Harcourt, in the last few weeks to report to the ministry to get tested. Samstel is the hospital where Dr Ikye Enemoah, who died of Ebola, worked.

Ex-NAFDAC DG Mrs Dora Akunyili made her first public appearance yesterday at the National Conference in Abuja after going through an undisclosed ailment that nearly claimed her life. Mrs Akunyili confirmed to reporters that she just came out of a major illness but she was well now and just needed time to put on some weight. Almost doesn't look like the same woman. A fruit vendor is losing business after her unsanitary behavior became known to the public. The fruit vendor in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is making headlines after she was seen sprinkling her own urine on fruit, which she sells to the public. The vendor sells fruit at the Renkini Bus terminal, where many people pass each day. Her disgusting actions became known when other vendors saw her squat and pee into a container. She then sprinkled the urine from the container onto the fruits, mainly apples and bananas.

From the depths of distress, disillusionment, dejection and the certainty of untimely death occasioned by HIV infection through blood transfusion at the tender age of 12, Gloria Asuquo, has risen to become a vibrant, assertive and ambitious young woman who is taking a decisive and incisive battle to one of the world’s most dreaded infectious disorders – HIV/AIDS.

In an encounter with Sola Ogundipe in Abuja, the energetic 24-year-old recounted the frustrations of living as a pauper in addition to the ignominy of HIV stigma and discrimination.

Today, Gloria who once contemplated death until sheer luck and doggedness turned her fortunes around and brought unhindered access to the elusive, life-saving treatment has undergone a transformation. The same HIV infection that took her to the brink of total despair is today a source of her blessing. How did it happen? She tells it all in this encounter.

Living with HIV stigma

I’m a young person diagnosed HIV positive at 12. I was in Primary six going to JSS1. I got infected through blood transfusion. The stigma was so much I couldn’t bear it. There were drugs at that time, but they were too expensive for my parents to afford. Each time my father raised the money to pay for my drugs, my mother would challenge him. Why are you giving her the money? she would ask. We know that she would soon die. Why is she taking the drugs? Why are we wasting money?  My mother went to the Church and told the Reverend who announced my status to the community.

LUTH acquires scanner that detects death in 10 seconds

Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH said they have acquired a CT scan equipment that has the capacity to run a check on all organs of the body, from head to toe in less than 10 seconds and fish out a patients death points for immediate treatment. The machine, called the 128-slice Aquillon CT scanner is the first of it's kind in West Africa.

Speaking on the machine, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Professor Akin Osibogun told Nigerian Tribune: 

"The Aquillon CT scanner is a 128-scanner and the main advantage it has over other CT scanners of earlier generations is its ability to penetrate deeper into the tissues and organs to show clearly the state of those tissues and organs. Of course the CT scanner is an imaging device and because it is able to provide images of tissues and organs inside the body. We are able to see the state in which those tissues and organs are and we are able to make diagnosis that help us to provide appropriate treatment for the patients.

"Earlier generations CT scanners are of course far better in terms of diagnostic capability than the x-ray because they provide clearer definitions than the x-ray but moving to a 128-slice CT scanner, in fact, that it is in terms of where current knowledge is, with regards to ability to get clearer images of tissues and organs that are internal to the body and therefore we are able to make better diagnosis. A further advantage of the 128-CT scanner is its speed with which it works and that means it is able to capture parts of the body that are in motion.

Prostitutes Sell Sperms For Blood Money

Sex workers in parts of Accra who demand their patrons to wear condoms before any intercourse have now found a more commercial use for the sperms that collect in the rubber sheath.

They sell a condom of sperms for a fixed amount of GH¢ 25,000 to desperate ‘Sakawa boys’ who use the sperms for money rituals.

A sex worker in her mid-twenties, who gave her name as Fatima, spilled the beans to NEWS-ONE last Saturday and said that the development had now become a common practice from which some sex workers made their money.

She, however, declined ever being involved in the practice which she described as “wicked and satanic”, citing a personal experience she had with her 32-year-old cousin.

Belgium to allow assisted suicide for children

Soon, little children will be able to decide for themselves if they want to continue living or die with the help of a doctor, according to legislation introduced in Belgium.

Belgium, is considering a significant change to its law on euthanasia, which would allow minors and Alzheimer's patients to ask permission to die.

The proposed changes to the law were presented to parliament this week by the Socialist Party and is likely to be approved by the other parties, although no date has yet been submitted for a parliamentary debate.

"The idea is to update the law to take greater account of the dramatic situations and extremely distressing cases we find no answer to," party leader Thierry Giet said.

The bill calls on "the current law to be extended to minors if they have the judgment or affected by an incurable disease."

Doctor jailed after sexually assaulting numerous minor female patients

A doctor who exploited his position to sexually assault numerous minor female patients was finally jailed for 11 years, according to court proceedings.

A General Practitioner, who sexually assaulted patients during medical examinations for more than 30 years, was jailed for 11 years this week.
British Doctor, Gousul Islam, 70, made inappropriate comments and propositions to patients and staff members.

In his office at town surgery, he regularly groped girls and young women.
Under the pretext of examinations, he fondled their breasts, caressed their thighs and touched them intimately.

The doctor asked the women to undress in front of him without a screen and lie on his treatment bed without a blanket or towel to protect their modesty.
Judge Simon Lawler said: “it was the worst case of this kind by a professional he has seen in 40 years.”

Hillary Clinton seriously ill

The normally indefatigable, globe-trotting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was Wednesday still laid low by a nasty stomach bug which has kept her out of the public eye since the weekend.

As the rumor mill kept up steam over whether she plans to run for president in 2016, the usually tireless Clinton remained out of sight after falling sick at the end of a tour of Europe.

“The secretary’s been really very ill. I mean, very. This stomach virus is a pretty vicious one,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

But she hastily clarified that the popular top US diplomat was not suffering from any life-threatening illness.

Clinton arrived back from a trip to Europe late Friday, but was forced to cancel a planned visit to Morocco this week for a key Friends of Syria meeting when she fell ill.

Since taking up her post almost four years ago, Clinton has kept up a relentless pace, visiting some 112 countries and on track to rack up a million miles on the job, making her the most traveled secretary of state ever according to PM News.

OMG! Man attempts suicide twice over eye problem

Taofeek Muraina never had it good as a child. His adulthood is not even better. This, perhaps, explains why the 40-year-old bricklayer thought it wise to die rather than being put to shame by friends and neighbours.

Twice this year, he has attempted suicide. The first time, PUNCH Metro learnt, was about five months ago, while the second one was on December 5.

On December 5, he had wanted to poison himself when a neighbour arrived on time and raised the alarm.

Muraina has been battling with an acute eye condition since when he was a child. As he grows, his condition worsens, making life unbearable for him.

Explaining reasons for attempting suicide, he said, “Life is unbearable for me. I was born with an eye problem. My wife, Tawa, left me and dumped our 10-year-old son with me. I learnt that she has got married to another man.

“I attempted to commit suicide by poisoning myself while my son and neighbours were not at home but my landlady got home while I was preparing the mixture.

His landlady, Mrs. Aminat Oseni, who said that Muraina had been her tenant for five years, explained that it was the second time that he attempted taking his own life.

Oseni said, “He (Muraina) is a friend to my son, Fatai, who is a welder. My son appealed to me that we should accommodate him when he came begging for accommodation.

Meet The World's Ugliest Woman?

 

When she was in high school, Lizzie Velasquez was dubbed "The World's Ugliest Woman" in an 8-second-long YouTube video. Born with a medical condition so rare that just two other people in the world are thought to have it, Velasquez has no adipose tissue and cannot create muscle, store energy, or gain weight. She has zero percent body fat and weighs just 60 pounds.

In the comments on YouTube, viewers called her "it" and "monster" and encouraged her to kill herself. Instead, Velasquez set four goals: To become a motivational speaker, to publish a book, to graduate college, and to build a family and a career for herself.

Now 23 years old, she's been a motivational speaker for seven years and has given more than 200 workshops on embracing uniqueness, dealing with bullies, and overcoming obstacles. She's a senior majoring in Communications at Texas State University in San Marcos, where she lives with her best friend. Her first book, "Lizzie Beautiful," came out in 2010 and her second, "Be Beautiful, Be You," was published earlier this month.

"The stares are what I'm really dealing with in public right now," she told Dr. Drew Pinsky in an interview on CNN's Headline News this week. "But I think I'm getting to the point where… instead of sitting by and watching people judge me, I'm starting to want to go up to these people and introduce myself or give them my card and say, 'Hi, I'm Lizzie. Maybe you should stop staring and start learning'."

Velasquez was born in San Antonio, Texas; she was four weeks premature and weighed just 2 pounds, 10 ounces. "They told us they had no idea how she could have survived," her mother, Rita, 45, told the Daily Mail. "We had to buy doll's clothes from the toy store because baby clothes were too big." Doctors warned Rita and her husband, Lupe, that their oldest child would never be able to walk or talk, let alone live a normal life. (Her two younger siblings were not affected by the syndrome.)

Man Had 9 Inch Fork Trapped In His Stomach For 10 Years After He Accidentally Swallowed It - Photos

When Lee Gardner rushed to hospital after vomiting blood and suffering debilitating stomach cramps he feared the worst. But doctors in Barnsley were left stunned when they discovered a nine-inch fork in the man’s stomach and incredibly it had been there for more than a decade. The baffled medics were even more confused when they found the piece of cutlery as Mr Gardner, 40, admitted he had completely forgotten swallowing it. A decade ago doctors had said that the whole fork would pass through his system naturally, so he assumed that it had gone. But in fact it was still completely intact and sitting at the bottom of his tummy.

He has now made a full recovery.

'I had been vomiting blood, and when they were looking inside me with the camera the doctor said: "Are you sure you’ve not swallowed anything?",' he said. 'I said no but when he said: "Are you sure, I can see prongs of what appears to be a fork?" - I remembered accidentally swallowing one years and years ago. 'I couldn’t believe it. I have never had any problems with my stomach, except once a couple of years ago I remember thinking I felt like something had lodged when I bent over awkwardly.

'But the advice when I swallowed it from the doctor was that it would just pass through my system and as that was so many years before I really didn’t think it could be the fork.' Mr Gardner remembered messing about with a plastic fork in his mouth years earlier - when he gagged and accidentally swallowed it. Doctors at Barnsley Hospital used a camera to look inside his stomach for a cause when they stumbled across the ‘mystery’ object. Images showed the fork head was resting in Lee’s stomach with the handle protruding into his small bowel. Its prongs, called tines, had pressed on the stomach lining causing an ulcer that led to the bleeding.

Consultant general surgeon, Hanis Shiwani, was asked to take a look by his baffled colleagues. He decided it would be too dangerous to try to extract the fork without surgery and carried out a 45-minute operation to cut open his stomach. He said: 'The fork was impacting on the stomach wall, causing an ulcer which was bleeding. I had to remove that part of the stomach and I was glad when it wasn’t cancerous. 'Technically it was not a challenging operation but it was exciting because it is not something we have ever done before.
'We know that coins, nails, pins and batteries are common things people swallow but not a nine-inch fork. I jokingly said that we should contact the Guinness Book of World Records.'

Mr Shiwani said Lee was fortunate the fork had not damaged his gullet on the way into his stomach. 'If it had been a metal fork, or had got stuck in the gullet it would have caused more damage earlier.' He said Lee, could have suffered a perforated stomach, potentially leading to a fatal infection, if the fork had not been removed. But Lee, who was discharged from hospital this week, is expected to make a full recovery. The consultant, who has worked at Barnsley Hospital for ten years, said he had never known a foreign object to last so long inside a person.

'If something does get lodged, then normally a patient would become ill almost immediately. This is why Lee’s case is so uncharacteristic. 'The plastic had been exposed to stomach acid for ten years but apart from it being black, there was no damage. It didn’t melt it down or anything which is remarkable.'

School forced teens to take pregnancy tests, bans pregnant students

If you are pregnant, a school in the U.S. will force you to remain home until after the birth.

A policy of Delhi Charter School in Louisiana that prevents pregnant students to attend school and be forced to take a pregnancy test to continue to attend school if administrators suspected pregnancy, has attracted the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The news media reported that the ACLU sent a letter Monday requesting a review of the school policy or the group will take legal action.
The Delhi Charter School policy states that the school tries to maintain an environment where students learn and demonstrate acceptable character traits that govern language, gestures, physical actions and written words.

"The school reserves the right to request any student to take a pregnancy test to confirm if the suspect student is in fact pregnant," the policy says.
The policy also allows the school to refer the student to a doctor of their choice. "If the test indicates that the student is pregnant, the student is not allowed to attend classes on the campus of Delhi Charter School."

Pregnant students, who wish to continue to go to school, must enroll in a course of study from home during pregnancy.
"They are punishing the girls for making the decision to have a child," said Marjorie Esman, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana on Monday.

Students who refuse to take a pregnancy test are "treated as a pregnant student and are provided opportunities for home study."
According to your Jewish news, the letter from the ACLU argues that the policy violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as it excludes students in educational programs and activities based on gender and violates the equal protection clause because it treats female students differently from men and is based on impermissible sexual stereotypes.
Esman said the policy is a pretext for sex discrimination.
Shirley said all public schools, including charter schools must comply with federal law.

"Maybe the school was not aware of the protection provided by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972," she said. "I feel a bit frustrated that perhaps not all our schools are aware of these compliance issues. I hope to remedy this or explain why they believe they have the ability to do this."

Woman Dies While Aborting 5-Month Pregnancy

It was  double tragedy for a young man who lost his girlfriend through abortion and at the same time faces a murder charge at a Magistrate’s court, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

The 35-year old Edeye Monday was arraigned before a Yaba magistrate’s court in Lagos State, yesterday for allegedly killing his lover, Tolani Adeuja, 22, while attempting to abort her 5-month pregnancy. He allegedly administered some drugs on her.

The incident happened at 5, Odo Street, Adexson bus stop, Akesan, a suburb of Lagos.

Monday reportedly administered some drugs to terminate Tolani’s pregnancy and ended up killing her and the unborn baby.

The late Tolani after taking the drugs started bleeding profusely and collapsed. While being rushed to a hospital, she died on the way.

The doctors merely certified her dead at the hospital.

Monday was arrested by the police at Igando division. After preliminary investigation, the police transferred the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba.

He was charged to a Yaba magistrate’s court where he is facing a one-count charge of murder before the presiding Magistrate, Mr. P. A. Adekomaya. His plea was not taken because he was on a holden charge.

The court ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody and his file duplicated and sent to the State Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice.The matter was adjourned till 27 August,  2012 for mention, according to PM News.

And the case being is still investigated by the state CID, M.A.K. Smith Street, Panti, Yaba, borders on what has been tagged Sexual Assault By Penetration on a 3yr old pupil (name withheld) by her class teacher, Miss Oruma Patience.

 

According to a petition written by the mother of the little girl, Mrs Zainab Rodemade and addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State CID, a copy of which was made available to City People. The whole saga began when the girl returned from school on a Thursday afternoon.

"On 21st June, 2012, my daughter returned from school as usual and I decided to bath her at about 8.20p.m I noticed she cried  when I was about washing her private part pointing finger to her private part which arose my interest to find out why. The petition read in part: And they stated further that "it was their daughter who explained her aunt Favour inserted pencil into her private part in their school toilet and also asked her to demonstrate how her aunt did it which she did. The disturbed mum further stated in her petition, I took it upon myself to report to the head teacher of the school the next day 22nd June 2012. The head teacher called the said aunt Favour and 2 other female teachers for my daughter to identify the person who used pencil on her private part surprisingly she still pointed to the same aunt Favour.
