A Former Governor of Ekiti State and Deputy Chairman, South of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Segun Oni, yesterday cautioned that the party may lose the 2018 governorship election if it fails to present a popular candidate.Speaking at the end of the year party organised for the APC members in Ifaki- Ekiti, Oni urged the delegates not to mortgage their future by voting for the highest bidder at the primaries.

“They shouldn’t turn profiteers because they have two options, which is either take money from politicians and get temporary relief or vote for the right candidate to win the general elections, so that the APC can control both the state and the federal for more dividends of democracy to come to our state,” he said.

Fayose pleads with Ekiti residents to allow him choose successor

Governor Ayodele Fayose has pleaded with the people of Ekiti State to allow him pick his successor as done in Lagos to achieve continuity in governance and political stability.

“We have lots of lessons to learn from Lagos State which has put its economic endowment in the hands of competent and stable managers over time, using the same political platform,” he said. Fayose who made the demand in his last New Year message to the people as governor,  said: “It is certain that continuity has the capacity to secure for us landmark and sustainable development. I urge you all to support me and my Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to transit and produce the next leadership for this state. Economic and social development are veritable outcomes of very sound, consistent and stable political superstructure.”

The former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmmumin Jibrin on Thursday exposed the fraudulent deals perpetrated by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara and other leaders of the House in the passage of the 2016 budget.

Jibrin was removed on Wednesday as Chairman, Appropriation committee of the House by Dogara.

Reacting to his removal on his twitter handle @AbdulABMJ on Thursday evening, Jibrin revealed that his inability to admit into the 2016 budget almost N30 billion personal requests from Speaker Yakubu Dogara and the three other principal officers pitched him against the House leadership and led to his decision to vacate the position.

The Kano-born lawmaker also clarified that he was not sacked from the position by Dogara as reported by the media but that he stepped down for peace to reign.

Jibrin said he is obliged to make a further statement after listening to the full statement of Speaker Dogara on why he had to leave as Chairman of the committee. “Speaker Dogara’s statement was a complete misrepresentation of the facts, false, mischievous, unfair and a calculated attempt to bring my name to disrepute, blackmail, silence and use me as a scapegoat.” He said.

The lawmaker vowed to pursue the issue and clear his name when the House resumes from recess. He alluded to the fact that his decision to assert his independence and insisting that the right thing be done at all times to expose corrupt people in the House led to the campaign against him.

Countering Mr Aluko’s claims, a spokesman to the Governor of Ekiti State, Lere Olayinka, said he was not surprised that Mr Aluko would make such claims, insisting that he (Aluko) was of an unstable character.

He further claimed that Mr Aluko had been involved in different crimes, ranging from admission racketeering, issuance of certificates to students while he was a lecturer.

“If he comes here to say some of these things, you should just laugh it off. He had said it by himself that he was here to say all these because Governor Fayose did not make him the Chief of Staff. If he received a call that he had been appointed as the Chief of Staff, he will come back here to say  that all he said was not true,” he stressed, insisting that people should only be believed if they have integrity.

Take Nnamdi Kanu to Kuje prison-Court orders

 

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu be remanded in Kuje prison pending his trial for treason.
Justice John Tsoho gave the order after listening to Mohammed Diri, counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), and Chuks Muoma (SAN), counsel to Kanu. Muoma had argued that the accused person be remanded in prison custody away from the cell of the DSS. He said that his client had been kept incommunicado in the custody of the DSS for three months. He therefore asked the court to send the accused person to prison so that his family could have access to him. Diri, however, prayed the court to keep Kanu in the custody of the DSS for security reasons. But the judge ruled that the defendant be kept in the custody of the Nigeria Prison Service, Kuje. Kanu arrived at the court a few minutes past 9am looking unkempt. 

15 ex-govs, 40 others stole N1.34tn in eight years –FG

The Federal Government has alleged that 55 former government functionaries and top businessmen stole N1.34tn from public treasury in eight years.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the allegation at a press conference to announce a National Sensitisation Campaign against Corruption in Abuja on Monday.

Although Mohammed did not disclose the authority for the allegation, he categorised the officials involved in the corrupt practices to include former state governors, ex-ministers, former legislators, civil servants, bankers and other businessmen.

Different government agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Department of State Services and some ad hoc committees have been intensely involved in one investigation or the other since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015.

Mohammed said, “The situation is dire and the time to act is now. Between 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of N1.34tn in Nigeria. That’s more than a quarter of last year’s national budget.

“Out of the stolen funds, 15 former governors allegedly stole N146.84bn; four former ministers allegedly stole N7.05bn; five former legislators allegedly stole N8.35bn; 12 former public servants, both at federal and state levels, allegedly stole over N14.18bn; eight people in the banking industry allegedly stole N524bn; while 11 businessmen allegedly stole N653bn.

Boko Haram militants have stepped up attacks in Borno state overnight as members of the deadly northern Nigerian sect yesterday  sacked police and army checkpoints in Gamboru Ngala and Shanni  near the Nigerian/Camerounian border

Overnight, the militants raided Waranbe village in Gwoza. Gwoza is  130 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

She should be more concerned and come to her grandma. The mother of Borno is not concerned about what is happening, her children are (not) involved".

Update: Japheth Omojuwa, Uche Briggs, others released

According to sources, Security officials have released popular blogger and youths activist Japheth Omojuwa, Uche Briggs and four others hours after they were arrested in Abuja for leading a protest over the deaths of 17 youths during the nationwide recruitment tests by the Nigeria Immigration Service.They were released around 8pm tonight, with their phones handed back to them. The police asked them to report back tomorrow morning. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also weighed in on the unlawful arrest...

A delegate at the ongoing National Conference in Nigeria, retired police AIG Hamma Misau has died at the National Hospital in Abuja. Mallam Misau died last night of an undisclosed illness at the age of 67.

Mallam Misau became famous after a photo of him taking a nap at the conference was shared  on social media three days ago.

Barrister Mohammed Hamma a cousin to the retired police officer confirmed his demise to SaharaReporters. He said a Muslim funeral is due shortly in Bauchi for the late delegate. Mallam Hamma Misau hails from Misau in Bauchi state.

The General Overseer of Nigeria’s Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said that the country called Nigeria was born deformed 100 years ago, adding that it died when Major General Aguiyi Ironsi abolished the regions in 1966.

The convener of the Save Nigeria Group, SNG, said this while speaking on the topic: “Birthing A New Nigeria Without Complications” during a live programme on Eko FM 89.75, on Tuesday, and monitored on the SNG’s twitter handle @savenigeria. Bakare added that the “Federal Republic of Nigeria” is a lie.

He said with the way the Nigerian is currently structured, we can never produce the Nigeria of our dreams.

HEARTLESS: What Governor Adams Oshiomhole Said to a Poor Widow (PHOTOS)

This can best be described as the most shocking remark ever made by a State Governor to a poor woman. The heart of a man who can say such things, especially in front of a huge crowd and cameras is desperately wicked.

This video shows Governor Adams Oshiomhole ostensibly leading officials of the state to sanitize the city of Benin, the Edo State capital. In the course of his tour of duty, he came across a widow roadside hawker.

The poor widow knelt before the imperial governor, a former labour leader, begging for her little means of livelihood to be saved. She pleaded that she's a widow.

But her pleas fell on the governor's deaf ear. In what could be regarded as the most unkind cut of all, the governor said the widowed woman should “go and die”!

Afterwards he stood for some seconds looking indifferently on how the officials took the women’s belongings away, and he left the scene of the drama.

Why I’m fighting Jonathan, by Amaechi

From CHRIS ANUCHA, Port HarcourtRivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has  again given reasons for not supporting  President  Goodluck Jonathan’s  2015 political ambition.

Amaechi, who is  also Chairman of  Nigeria Governors’ Forum(NGF), said  the Jonathan administration has failed  South-South  where the President hails from.

Consequently, he urged the youths not to emulate the national leadership as represented by the President. “Nigeria’s leadership is not worthy of emulation by the youths,’’ he said.

He spoke yesterday at the Rotary Youth Leadership Award  ceremony held at the State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) in Port Harcourt.

Amaechi, who also reacted to the call by the Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan,  for all the South-South  states to support  President Jonathan’s re-election bid, said he would not back  what is bad, citing poor condition  of federal projects as his reason.

He said if the leadership was right, the South-East road which cuts across the South –South states would not be in its present poor condition.

DRESSED in black - trousers, jacket and shoes - with a white shirt and red tie, the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss was led into the courtroom by one of a judicial clerks around 2.25 p.m.  

Mr. Nuhu Ribadu performed the traditional oath swearing by placing his left hand on the Holy Quran as he was led to go through the lines to affirm that he would be giving truthful evidence.  

Within a minute, Crown Prosecutor Sasha Wass started her cross-examination. Looking relaxed, calm and often responding to the prosecutor’s questions with a smile and “yes, mum,” Ribadu held the court spellbound as he disclosed how Ibori was ‘desperate’ for him to take a $15 million cash bribe which the former governor allegedly gave him in Senator Andy Ubah’s house in the presence of the then Head of Operations, Ibrahim Lamorde and another official of the EFCC, James Garba. Lamorde is now Chairman of the EFCC.  

Presidency plotting to unseat Mark, Tambuwal – New PDP

THE  faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, known as the New PDP, has accused the Presidency of plotting to remove   Senate President David Mark  and  the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

The allegation, which was dismissed by the Presidency as a product of mischief makers, was made hours after The PUNCH had gathered that PDP members in the House loyal to the Bamanga Tukur faction had  set up a “strategy group” to watch Tambuwal.

The New PDP claimed that the plot to sack Mark and the Speaker  was over the visit of its National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje and  seven aggrieved PDP  governors   to the National Assembly on Tuesday.

It said in a statement  by  its  National Publicity Secretary , Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, on Thursday, that  those behind the scheme must have a rethink.

The statement reads in part, “To us, this plot by the hawks in the Presidency is politics taken too far and it  illustrates the extent to which they are prepared to go in their determination to plunge this country into chaos.

No apology on Fayemi’s 2nd term endorsement – Tinubu

NATIONAL leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, weekend, said he has no apology to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in exercising his democratic rights as a citizen and party leader to endorse Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, as the party’s governorship nominee to seek a second term come the 2014 election.

Reacting to PDP outburst through Mr. Tony Okeke, its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Asiwaju Tinubu, insisted, however, that he was neither  disturbed nor surprised at the level to which PDP could descend to attack perceived enemies or tormentors.

Okeke complained against what he called venom in the PDP’s statement and downright gutter language employed in attacking the remarks by Asiwaju Tinubu.

Bamidele vows to pursue governorship ambition in Ekiti

Member of the House of Representatives, Opeyemi Bamidele  has vowed to snatch the governorship ticket from the incumbent, Dr. Kayode Fayemi during next year’s primaries.

This disregards reported adoption of Fayemi for a second term by ACN leaders at a recent meeting in Ado Ekiti.

In a statement personally signed in Ado Ekiti, yesterday, Bamidele, who is representing Ado Ekiti and Irepodun-Ifelodun Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said there was no where, or any meeting attended by the party leaders where Fayemi was adopted to run for  second term.

According to him, the report of the adoption was masterminded by some groups within the party to scheme him out of the race

The former commissioner in Lagos State in the statement, therefore vowed to pursue his ambition with vigour without any retreat or surrender to the wills of his opponents

The statement read in part: “I have read in some of the Nigerian dailies the purported report of what transpired at the July 3, 2013, Ado Ekiti meeting of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and I find it difficult to reconcile the reports with the contents and actual proceedings at the said meeting, just like many other leaders of the party who were personally in attendance at the meeting.

Storm in Baptist Church over anti-Akala Pastor

WHEN on Sunday, April 21, 2013 some heavily armed policemen with an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), stormed the Okelerin First Baptist Church, Ogbomoso Oyo State, apparently to maintain the peace, many residents of the area, as well as some members of the church felt jittery, thinking that the dreaded Boko Haram sect might have infiltrated the church.

Such was not the development however, as Nigerian Compass on Saturday later gathered that the peace of the church was ruptured when the security agents came in, which led to the disruption of the ongoing holy service. It was learnt that some members of the church, who were up in arms against the pastor, Revd Dr. John Aworinde, had invited the armed security men to deal with him.

The shepherd was accused of sundry allegations including high-handedness in his dealings with the congregation, misappropriation of some funds, and more importantly alleged display of partisan politics, contrary to the ethics of his calling.

The immediate past governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, recently celebrated, in a grand style, the 60 years remembrance of his late father, Pa Opadoyin, in the church, the Akala family being a very strong factor in the holy house established in the early 50s.

Wikileaks founder Assange running for senate in Australia

The embattled founder of the website Wikileaks has announced his intention to run for a senate seat in Australia, according to press reports.

Assange said his political party plans to be names Australian WikiLeaks, which will significantly advance the Wikileaks cause. He said he would be a candidate for the Senate, and added that "a number of very worthy admired people by the Australian public, have indicated their willingness to stand for election with his party ticket.”

Assange managed to register to vote abroad, while still in exile in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, and his father is managing the registration of the WikiLeaks party and presentation of its official documents.
