Timi Dakolo |
Donald Timiebi Dakolo has been in the spotlight since 2007 when he won the West African Idol. Born to a Nigerian father (David, from Bayelsa State) and a Ghanaian mother (Norah), Timi, as he is popularly called, began
singing at the age of 12, when he joined his church choir. The R&B
singer, in 2003, was a founding member of Purple Love, a musical group
in Port Harcourt. The group later disbanded in 2005, when some members
left for greener pastures. Before his Idol success, Timi competed and won G.E Facto, a talent show held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
WHAT is fashion to you?
It’s
making statement with your wear. I always want to leave a lasting
impression in people’s mind, by looking good and comfortable with a dint
of style in whatever I put on. I just don’t want to be a face in the
crowd, but a cynosure. I don’t over or under dress; I try as much as
possible to stand out in whatever I am wearing.
Style sense
It’s being classy and approachable.
Favourite colour
Blue, because it’s calm and cool. It creates an irresistible ambience around me.
Favourite piece of clothing
I’m beginning to like straight pants, but it has always been jackets.
Favourite designer(s)
Most times, I tell the designers what I want; I bring the idea and they make the wears. However, I like Mai Atafo and Ouch.
What would you not be caught wearing?
Tight rock star leather pant.
What do you consider as fashion faux pax?
Wearing colour riot clothes — green shirt, purple pant and lemon shoe.
Most expensive fashion piece ever bought
It’s a leather jacket, worth N120, 000.
How often do you upgrade your wardrobe?
Once
in a while like now, I have made different kind of jackets. I’m on a
mission to bring back the sexy from the 70s. It’s what I call blast from
the past.
Favourite signature scent
Fangoria Water, it has a sweet lasting smell. It also announces my presence anywhere I go.
What’s on shopping list for the month?
Shoes and ties
Body grooming and favourite body products
I
like bathing with cold water. Someone said it is an ancient healer. I
also use palm olive products because I like my skin to be oily.
What do you think as sexy in men and women?
Simplicity and nice dress sense; it’s not about your swag, but outward appearance.
Craziest thing ever done
Travelling to Enugu to woo a girl and when I got there, she asked if I was ok….
Favourite food
Eba with egusi or groundnut soup … my day is incomplete without it.
Turn on
Honesty, straightforwardness, simplicity and humility.
Turn off
I hate people who say one thing and do the opposite. It takes seven lies to cover up one.
When are you tying the knot?
Sooner than soon.
Philosophy of life
It’s riskier never to take risk.
What would you change in Nigeria if given the opportunity as a leader?
It is the people’s mindset; if one is able to change that, all other things will be easy to do
