Man Ordered To Sweep Court For Stealing Phone

A 49-year-old-man, Akintayo, has been convicted by an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court, in Osun State for stealing a mobile phone worth N7, 000.
The Investigating Police Officer, recalled that on the fateful day, the culprit went to the shop to drink and was asked to watch over the shop by the owner.
Upon her return to the shop, the owner could not find her phone and she raised the alarm, which led to Akintayo’s arrest.  At the police station, he confessed to the crime.
The charge sheet stated that Akintayo stole the phone belonging to one Mrs. Pat Emmanuel – a bar owner.
The convict stole the Nokia phone at the bar located in Balogun area of Oke-Baale in Osogbo recently.
Although Akintayo pleaded guilty, he urged the court to have mercy on him, promising not to steal again.
The charge sheet said the offence was contrary to Section 390 (9) of Osun State penal code.
His lawyer, Mrs. Amaechi, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, saying the culprit was a first time offender.
Also in his interlocutory appeal, the culprit, who appeared sober, told the court that if given another chance he would turn over a new leaf.
Magistrate Makanju ordered that Akintayo should clean the court premises for five days and be monitored by the police to ensure compliance.
