The gang with the AK 47 rifle hidden in their TV |
The Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Lagos State Police Command,
yesterday paraded six suspected robbers who were arrested at Festac
Town, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
According to the police, the six-man gang who specialised in car
snatching, was arrested when one of them was held and he led police
operatives to the hideout of a member of the gang called Godwin Michael
at 5, Ayeke Close, Sabo, Alaba, Ajangbadi, off Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Policemen
were shocked to discover an AK-47 rifle used during the Liberian civil
war hidden in a 24-inch television set inside Michael’s room.
Their
armourer, Obinna Henry said to be owner of the gun, was already on
remand at Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos on allegation of robbery.
Another
member of the gang paraded yesterday, Stephen Omeike, 26, claimed to be
a businessman who deals in electronics. Omeike was alleged to be the
receiver of goods stolen by the gang members. He also allegedly
participated in their operations and gave them money to procure
ammunition.
In his statement to the police, Kelechi Ogbuehi said he gave information to Henry Obinna on where to go for robbery operation.
But
he was short changed in the sharing of their loot. The suspect said he
was arrested by the Festac Police Division last Tuesday and transferred
to SARS the following day.
According to Chidiebere John, he was
deported from India where he was an illegal alien for many years. He
later met some members of the gang. He said during their last operation,
a Toyota Avalon was snatched from its owner at gun point.
Chidiebere said he drove the car after it was snatched and he was given N10,000 as his share of the loot.
In
his statement to the police, Chinonso Obiora, 28, a trader at Alaba
said Stephen Omeike’s shop was close to his own at Alaba. He said when
Stephen told him his business was not doing on well, Chinonso claimed he
introduced him to another member of the gang at the hotel where they
relax after any successful operation.
The suspect admitted collecting N93,000 when the gang had a good outing during a robbery operation.
After they were paraded, the police said the six suspects will be arraigned in court soon.
