A 300 level Physics and Astronomy
student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, was on Thursday found dead
at the hockey pitch of Akanu Ibiam Stadium on the campus.
The deceased, Onyebuchi Okonkwo, was
found hanging with an electric cable, which was tied to the roof of an
uncompleted building behind the hockey pitch.
While his body dangled, there was a
kitchen knife under his feet and several Physics textbooks littered the
scene of the incident.
Our correspondent found out that Okonkwo was the class rep of 300 level Physics and Astronomy students. PUNCH Metro also
reliably gathered that he was on the scholarship of MTN, Shell and that
of his community in Oraukwu Town, Idemili Local Government Area of
Anambra State before his death.
The Dean, Student Affairs Unit, Prof. Chukwuemeka Oyeoku, described the incident as “unfortunate and shocking.”
He said, “No matter what the problem is,
the best is not to commit suicide. There is no problem shared with
friends and relations that cannot be solved. Today is a sad day for the
university.”
One of Okonkwo’s friends, said, “He was
on Shell and MTN scholarship, so I’m surprised and shocked over what
could have led him to take his life.”
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the
friend said, “We attended lectures together on Wednesday afternoon at
Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research. He sent me and
some other friends text message around 11:43pm to meet him at the hockey
pitch, only to get there and discover that he had committed suicide.”
In tears, he added, “One of his brothers
is a manager in one of the banks, only God knows what happened.
Onyebuchi has no problem with anybody.”
When contacted, the Police Public
Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said, “His
(Okonkwo’s) body has been removed by the police and deposited at the
university’s medical centre mortuary.”
According to Amaraizu, investigation has commenced so as to find out if he actually committed suicide or was murdered.
