Hell was let loose Wednesday afternoon after a truck belonging to Dangote company killed a student of Benue State University.
Other angry students held motorists hostage for more than four hours by blocking the Makurdi – Gboko highway.
It was gathered that the student allegedly killed by the Dangote truck was in the final year and was studying Economics.
It was learnt that the student in an attempt to cross road from the second
campus axis of the university which has no pedestrian bridge, unlike the
first gate of the institution, was knocked down by the Dangote truck
which was speeding excessively.
It was also gathered that the driver was said to have escaped after the incident.
In
the meantime, in protest, the students set bonfires preventing
vehicular movement along the Makurdi-Gboko highway, insisting that the
driver must be given to them, even as they razed down the State Board of
Internal Revenue Service directly opposite the university .
It took the intervention of the police who responded rapidly by shooting intermittently into the air to disperse the crowd.
However,
it was learnt that in the process, a police officer shot a 100 level
Accounting student whose identity is yet to be known.
Commenting
on the incident , the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO ASP
Ejike Alaribe said: “The driver of the truck is now in police custody .
We are still investigating the allegation that a police officer shot a
student. I will keep you posted once I get the information.”
Following
the incident, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Nicholas Adah has
promised that the university authorities will construct bumps on the
road to avoid such incident in future, considering the location of the
institution.
